Can I put leaves in my compost heap?

Autumnal leaves are made nearly entirely of Carbon and take a long time to break down, one to three years, depending on leaf type. They are best composted separately if you have large quantities of them. Simply gather them when they are wet, after it has been raining, and put them in a black plastic bag. Make a few holes in the sack and leave them under a hedge to rot, giving them a turn every six months. Alternatively, put four wooden stakes in the ground and surround with wire mesh, heap the wet leaves into this cage and turn periodically.
