How can I prevent rats in my compost bin?

Provided that you compost correctly you are highly unlikely to get rats in your compost bin. Do not compost cooked food; including bread, cooked vegetables, meat, fish or dairy products (crushed egg shells are allowed). If you live close to cereal growing fields, barns or you have a stream close to your house, the chance of rats will increase. A compost bin can provide a sheltered home for a rat in the cold months. If you feel that you are at risk, line the base and the inside of the bin with fine wire mesh, ensuring that the mesh goes up the inside of your bin by at least 12 inches/30 centimetres. This will prevent rats from chewing through. If you discover rats in your compost bin, disturb them by kicking the bin or flushing them out with a hose. Above all don’t be put off - remember rats are rarely a problem!!
