Composting?

Why hasn’t my compost bin got air holes in it?

Provided that you ensure that the materials you put in the compost bin are a combination of ingredients that provide both moisture e.g. grass cuttings and fruit and vegetable peelings (greens) and those that provide structure and air pockets e.g. fine woody waste and screwed up paper and card (browns), then there will be sufficient air within the mixture. By composting in this way you eliminate the need to turn your heap. Compost bins with air holes lead to the mixture drying out where it is in direct contact with the hole. The air is unable to penetrate deeper than the first couple of centimetres, resulting in dry compost around the edges and wet compost in the centre.
